Tokyo’s Cherry Blossom (Sakura) Spot – Koishikawa Korakuen Gardens

I just talked about the full-blooming weeping cherry tree in Rikugien Gardens, and this is another Japanese garden to view cherry blossoms in Tokyo City. It is Koishikawa Korakuen Garden.

This garden is famous for plum blossoms, iris flowers and fall foliage, but it’s a place for cherry blossoms, too.
If you wish to

  1. See reflections of cherry blossoms in a pond
  2. And explore a Japanese garden’s beauty at the same time,
It must be a great place.

I upload photos more than words this time, but I don’t forget tourist information to visit there. Enjoy it!

Sakura fully blooming in Koishikawa Korakuen,

The path around Shinobazu Pond in Ueno Park is a fantastic place to see reflections of cherry blossoms. But here, you can enjoy beauty of Japanese gardens as architecture.

The large pond with cherry blossoms in Koishikawa Korakuen

Originally built in the 17th century by the samurai clan of Tokugawa, it has a lot of essences of Japanese gardens.

Stones, ponds, streams, bridges, islands, hills for views….

You walk around the large pond, and if you are lucky, you’ll find blue kingfishers (called kawasemi in Japanese. If you have been reading Tokyo Direct Diary for a long time, you have seen the photo on my profile…) in a bush.
Cherry blossoms beyond the pond

Not as big as that in Rikugien Gardens, but the weeping cherry trees are so beautiful.

The white roof seen over there is Tokyo Dome, one of the biggest baseball stadium in Japan.

The sign board says, “Special Places of Scenic Beauty and Special Historic Site of the country Koishikawa Korakuen.” (Japanese language contains Chinese characters. If you understand Chinese, you feel familiar with them.) It is very rare that a place is registered as these two. Other than Koishikawa Korakuen, there are only Hama Rikyu Gardens in Tokyo, famous Kinkakuji Temple in Kyoto, and a few.

One more story. Koishikawa Korakuen is one of the best spots for autumn leaves in Tokyo. This red bridge is the place. In autumn, maple leaves turn red here.

The water is extremely clear and beautiful here.

It is made as a stream. Red maple leaves will surround here in autumn.

I can’t wait for red maple leaves in autumn here, but cherry blossoms are as beautiful as them!
Next post will be a cherry blossom report in Tokyo City again!
